It's the axe that this film aims to explore. How did they first appear ? Who was the first polynesian grafter ? What is his story ?
This 52 min documentary relates the family stories of Petero TUPANA, first polynesian grafter in Manihi. Through his reunion with his niece, Sophie NOHOTEMOREA who comes back to the island after 10 years of absence, Petero narrates his father's tale. Ato unparalleled diver for oyster farms would meet his end due to "taravana" rapture of the deep.
Following frequent diving accidents, the industry would have to change toward nacre hatcheries and cultured pearls. An entire part of the country's economy was indeed impacted. Petero TUPANA would be a pioneer on this new adventure and would end up being a reference in this field.
This story tells us of this self-taught paumotu who ranked up next to the best grafters in Polynesia.
